Afro-Caribbean workshop by percussionist Jorge Arce with masqueraders
Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center theatre. Lowell, MA
Information: 978-275-1719  http://www.nps.gov/lowe

In honor of Black History Month, the Lowell Folklife Series invites you to an Afro-Caribbean workshop with a hint of Caribbean carnival. Jorge Arce is a percussionist, educator, and native of Ponce, Puerto Rico. His performance on February 24th is a unique and interactive exploration of Puerto Rican and Afro-Caribbean culture. Impersonating characters representative of the African ancestry of Puerto Rican culture, Jorge presents music, dances, lore, and stories handed down over 600 years of history.

The musical/theatrical workshop will feature the Arno Peter’s Projection map (showing what many believe are more realistic dimensions of the world’s continents) and over 20 percussion instruments played throughout the Caribbean.  A special treat will be two carnival masqueraders from Puerto Rico, Sixto Ayala and Yarimar Navarro, wearing the typical vejigante masks of the season.  Audience  members  will  be guided and encouraged to join in on drums, rhythm instruments, and dances throughout the performance.
